NCOUC - Group 3

Missing or Unidentified Person

On January 1, 1990, the skeletal remains of an unidentified white male, estimated to be between 45 and 65 years old, were discovered by hunters in a wooded or rural area near US Route 1 and Highway 644 in Brunswick County, Virginia. The postmortem interval (PMI) was estimated at approximately 6 months to 1 year (with some reports noting 8-12 months), indicating the individual had been deceased for roughly that duration before discovery. The cause and manner of death remain undetermined. Forensic examination revealed evidence of significant healed traumatic injuries likely sustained around 15 years prior to death, possibly from a motor vehicle accident or similar high-impact event. These included fractures to the nose, upper jaw, cheekbones, left collarbone, right-side ribs, and left arm, along with a prior surgical craniotomy and burr hole procedure that resulted in noticeable facial asymmetry (with the right side appearing higher and the right eye positioned lower than the left). Additional findings included arthritis in the lumbar spine and poor dentition. The individual was wearing a blue and white short-sleeved striped shirt and blue Trax sneakers at the time of death. Despite these distinctive physical characteristics and clothing items, the man's identity has not been established, and the case remains open as an unidentified decedent.
