Case Details:On July 28, 2007, a swimmer contacted the Richmond Police Department in Richmond, Virginia, after discovering what appeared to be human remains in the James River. Responding authorities recovered a single left femur belonging to an adult, found submerged in approximately five feet of water. Extensive searches of the surrounding area at the time of discovery and during subsequent efforts failed to locate any additional remains. Forensic anthropological analysis determined the bone most likely belonged to a White adult female, though the individual’s age could only be broadly estimated between 18 and 99 years due to the limited skeletal evidence. Because no other remains were recovered, it was not possible to estimate the decedent’s height, weight, hair color, or eye color. Anthropologists further assessed that the remains may have been in the river for approximately three years prior to recovery, suggesting the individual’s death likely occurred between 2003 and 2004.
