Ode Edwin Ulver, 32, of California, was reported missing after he was last seen in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on January 1, 1977, while visiting the city. Ulver was born May 20, 1944, and is described as a white male standing approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall and weighing between 155 and 180 pounds, with blond or strawberry-blond hair and hazel or blue eyes. He reportedly arranged to rent a private airplane in the Sioux Falls area to fly to Detroit, Michigan; law enforcement has not confirmed that the flight took place, and no verified sighting or contact with Ulver has been documented since January 1, 1977. Ulver may also go by the names Edward Orville Ulver, Edwin Ode Ulver, Olde Ulver, or Orville Ulver, and by the nickname "Butch." At the time of his disappearance he held a bachelor's degree in studio art from Sonoma State College (now Sonoma State University) in Rohnert Park, California.
Ulver's disappearance is investigated by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department in California, the agency of record cited by public missing-persons listings; his ties to Riverside County are corroborated by a December 1977–January 1978 legal notice in a Riverside County Superior Court divorce proceeding naming him as respondent, filed out of the court's Indio branch. The case is listed with the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System as NamUs #MP64667 and with the California Department of Justice Missing Persons database. It remains open and unresolved, with no confirmed recovery of Ulver or the aircraft he reportedly intended to fly. Some researchers have discussed a 1978 unidentified-remains case discovered at Medicine Mountain, South Dakota, as a possible comparison due to general physical similarity, but this has not been confirmed or announced by any law enforcement agency as connected to Ulver. Anyone with information regarding Ulver's whereabouts or disappearance is asked to contact the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
