Case Details
NCOUC - Group 3
Missing or Unidentified Person
On May 2, 1989, the body of a newborn infant was discovered in a landfill in Rustburg, Virginia, in Campbell County. The infant was male, of White/Caucasian appearance, full-term, and had been born alive and viable. He had black hair and blue eyes, and measured approximately 20 inches in length and 6 pounds. A medical examination determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide; the infant had been suffocated shortly after birth. At the time of discovery the remains were in a decomposed and not readily recognizable condition, and no identifying documents, clothing, or personal effects were recovered with the body. The infant's identity, and that of his parents, has never been established.
Investigators searched the surrounding area for additional evidence and retraced local trash collection routes in an effort to narrow the point of disposal. As part of the investigation, school nurses and social services workers in the area were interviewed regarding any knowledge of women who may have been in the late stages of pregnancy prior to May 2, 1989; the resulting leads were followed up on but did not lead to an identification. The case remains open and unresolved as a homicide; anyone with information is encouraged to submit a tip through the National Center for Open and Unsolved Cases. Agency Case Number: W1989-60519
