Angela Lynne McConnell, 26, an enrolled member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe from Hoopa, California, and Michael Thomas Bingham, Jr., 31, described in press coverage as her boyfriend and a resident of the city of Shasta Lake, California, were found dead on September 7, 2018, on undeveloped private property near 500 Black Canyon Road in the city of Shasta Lake, Shasta County, California. Shasta County Sheriff's Office deputies and investigators, including personnel from the Major Crimes Unit, responded to the location around 12:15 p.m. that day. Both McConnell and Bingham had died of gunshot wounds.
The property had reportedly been used by the couple as a camping site; McConnell's mother disputed news characterizations of the location as a "homeless camp," describing it as an ordinary camping site. McConnell had lived most of her life in Hoopa and, in the period before her death, had also been staying in the Shasta County area, including in Redding, with Bingham; Bingham's father discovered the two bodies near his own residence. No last-seen time, clothing description, or personal effects for either victim have been published. At the time of the release of initial information, investigators stated there was no indication of danger to the general public and that no suspect was in custody.
The Shasta County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit is the lead investigating agency; no federal agency involvement has been publicly reported. As of the most recent available reporting, spanning statements from 2019 through 2022 and community events referencing the case as recently as 2025, the investigation remains open and unsolved. No suspect or person of interest has been publicly named by law enforcement, and no arrest has been made.
Investigators quoted in multiple years have described the case as active, with leads being followed, while stating that no further details could be disclosed. A private investigator retained by the Hoopa Valley Tribe reportedly developed an investigative lead as of 2021. A combined reward of up to $30,000 has been offered for information leading to an arrest, jointly funded by the Shasta County Sheriff's Office and the Hoopa Valley Tribe.
The case has also been cited in state and community coverage of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, given McConnell's tribal enrollment.
