Missing or Unidentified Person

Oscar Moe, an elderly farmer of the Keene-Charlson area of McKenzie County, North Dakota, was reported missing on March 29, 1991 — Good Friday. That day, Moe drove his wife, Evelyn, from their farm home to Watford City, where he accompanied her to a clinic and stayed as she was admitted to the hospital. He did not return home. Family members reported multiple possible sightings of a man matching Moe's description driving in and around Watford City, Arnegard, and Alexander that day. A farmer near Dore reported that a man matching Moe's description had asked him for directions back to Watford City, appeared to understand the directions, and drove off; this was the last reported sighting of anyone matching Moe's description. Moe was not seen or heard from again. Approximately one week later, his car, a Plymouth Horizon, was found abandoned by horseback riders in high brush and grass along a road near Trenton Lake in Williams County, in swampy, remote lowland terrain.

The McKenzie County Sheriff's Office, notified the day Moe went missing, led the initial search. After the vehicle was located near Trenton Lake, a large multi-agency search effort was organized in Williams County, involving local law enforcement, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, family, neighbors, and community volunteers; the search used horses, a helicopter, four-wheel all-terrain vehicles, and motorcycles, and covered ground by air and on foot, including a check of part of eastern Montana. A search dog and handler from Billings, Montana, later joined the effort. Despite searching some areas as many as five times, searchers were unable to locate Moe, and the search was eventually called off without result. Moe has never been found. No additional identifiers (NamUs, NCIC) or tip-line information were located in the course of this research; anyone with information is asked to contact the McKenzie County Sheriff's Office or the Williams County Sheriff's Office. Case #J2013-007.
