Case Details
NCOUC - Group 3
Crime
Barbara"Jean" Schoeneberg was a 57-year-old English teacher at Ganado High School in rural Jackson County, Texas, where she had taught ninth- and tenth-grade students for at least five years. She lived in the Hillje, Texas, area. On the morning of August 5, 1999, she left home for her regular walk along nearby county roads. Near the intersection of County Road 311 and County Road 320, south of Hillje and about a mile from her residence, an unknown attacker cut her throat at a turnaround point along her route; she died nearby. A farm worker reported seeing her alive roughly 30 minutes before her body was found. Investigators have said nothing was stolen and there was no sexual assault. No description of her clothing at the time has been documented but was reported as "dressed for a walk".
The case continues to be investigated with the assistance of a state cold-case unit; Jean's family has been ruled out as suspects, and no suspect has been publicly identified or charged. Investigators have described a possible suspect as male and a vehicle of interest as a white truck with black coloring on the front. A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered through Texas Crime Stoppers for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is encouraged to submit a tip through the National Center for Open and Unsolved Cases at openunsolved.org, referencing Texas DPS Cold Case reference number 130.
