NCOUC - Group 3

Missing or Unidentified Person

Katherine Ann "Kathy" Schupp Major, then 53, of no fixed local address, was last seen at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at the Four Seasons Resort in Teton Village, Wyoming, where she had been a guest. The day before her disappearance, hotel staff caught her on video taking roughly $715 in merchandise from a spa display cabinet using a set of master keys; she admitted to the theft, agreed to reimburse the resort, and was asked to leave. While she was packing her belongings in room 556, a hotel security employee checked on her progress and found the room empty roughly 40 minutes later. The glass door to the outside was open and the in-room safe was ajar, but there was no sign of a struggle. Major left behind her wallet, purse, toiletries, approximately $45,000 in cash, her two cats, and a note addressed to her mother reading, "Please take care of [her cats]. I have nothing." She is a white female, 5'5" tall, approximately 120–125 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes, a scar on the lower right side of her abdomen, a mole on her right cheek, and pierced ears; she was last seen wearing an off-white Cloudveil hooded sweatshirt with embroidery on the left arm. Her white Jaguar convertible was recovered in the resort's parking garage.

The Teton County Sheriff's Office is the lead agency, assisted at the time by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI). Search teams, including three K-9 units, tracked a scent from Major's room across Granite Loop Road toward Obsidian Drive and down to Garnet Drive before losing the trail near open fields; no trace of her was found. Investigators located items in her room, including pill bottles, hospital syringes, wigs, and hair extensions, consistent with a documented history of bipolar disorder and prior suicide attempts. A man seen with Major shortly before her disappearance was interviewed and is not considered a suspect. One possible sighting, reported in Texas in 2014, was ruled out after fingerprint comparison. The case remains open and unsolved; investigating authorities and Major's family believe she is deceased, though she has not been declared so and no remains have been recovered. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Teton County Sheriff's Office at (307) 733-2331 or the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation at (307) 777-7181. NamUs Case #MP18171.
